Overview of CPD including bio of speakers/email contacts
Whether you work in a hospital, a community health service, a health technology team, or a regulatory body, the chances are that your working environment is changing fast. Electronic health records, shared care platforms, data-driven decision-making, and AI-assisted workflows are no longer future ambitions, they are being rolled out now, across Ireland, the UK, and the wider EU.
Ireland’s Digital for Care framework, the NHS 10 Year Health Plan, the European Health Data Space, and the EU AI Act are all driving a fundamental shift in how health services are organised, delivered, and governed. And every one of these changes depends on people who understand how health information and management systems actually work.
The demand for professionals with these skills is growing rapidly, and it is not being met. There is an urgent, well-documented need for people who can bridge the gap between clinical practice and digital systems: professionals who understand health informatics, data governance, systems implementation, privacy regulation, and digital leadership.
- For clinicians and healthcare staff, this is an opportunity to develop capabilities that are increasingly valued in every part of the health system.
- For technology professionals, data specialists, and project managers, health informatics offers a growing range of roles in a sector where the work genuinely matters.
- For those considering a move into healthcare, this course provides a solid foundation to launch a meaningful career in a field facing real skills shortages.
This course provides a structured, professionally oriented grounding in the core competency areas of healthcare information and management systems, as defined by HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society). Over four weeks, you will work through the healthcare and technology environments, clinical informatics, systems analysis and design, implementation and support, testing and evaluation, privacy and security, and management and leadership.
The content is informed by the internationally recognised CPHIMS® (Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems) and CAHIMS® (Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems) certification frameworks, the leading international credentials for health informatics professionals. Participants who complete the course will be well positioned to pursue either certification, giving you a concrete, internationally recognised professional credential.
Delivered online over four weeks via Microsoft Teams, the course comprises four live two-hour sessions complemented by supporting online materials for self-directed review between sessions. This structure is designed to fit around the commitments of working professionals while providing structured, expert-led engagement with the material each week.
Key learning outcomes include:
- Understanding the structure and characteristics of healthcare environments and the role of information and management systems professionals within them.
- Identifying the components of healthcare technology infrastructure and the applications that support clinical, administrative, and operational functions.
- Applying core concepts of systems analysis, design, selection, implementation, and ongoing support within healthcare settings.
- Recognising the principles of privacy and security as they apply to health information, including comparative awareness of US (HIPAA), EU (GDPR, EHDS), and UK (Data Protection Act 2018) regulatory frameworks.
- Evaluating management and leadership practices that support effective health informatics programmes and digital transformation.
By the end of this course, you will have a well-grounded understanding of healthcare information and management systems, practical awareness of how these concepts apply across different regulatory environments, and a professional foundation that can support your career development. Whether that means pursuing CPHIMS® or CAHIMS® certification, taking on new responsibilities within your current organisation, or moving into a dedicated health informatics role, you will be equipped with the knowledge and framework to make that transition.
