Students requiring additional supports on placement

Underperforming Students

Placements in which a student is struggling or underperforming are very often complex and sensitive and are managed on a case-by-case basis using individualised and holistic approach at all times.

The Practice Education team will provide support and guidance to practice educators and students as required.

Students with Disabilities on Placement

If you are a student with a disability as defined under the Equal Status Act you should consider registering with the Disability Service.

Students who are registered with the Disability Service may avail of reasonable accommodation during clinical placement.

A reasonable accommodation is any arrangement, change or modification that seeks to reduce the impact of an impairment, disability or specific learning difficulty without creating an advantage over other students in assessment, or creating undue risk for anyone during practical work.

Trinity Disability Service - Trinity College Dublin works with students to ensure that they can participate fully in all aspects of the course, including clinical placements, and can have the opportunity to demonstrate core competencies in terms of the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become a CORU registered Physiotherapist.

Various podcasts, webinars and presentations are available through the Assessment and Feedback Resources and Student Supervision sections of this webpage.

Over the past year, members of the practice education team have been involved in creating an online learning resource for clinical teachers, together with staff from across the School of Medicine. This is a free online resource available to all clinical educators, which may also be useful for interested academic/teaching staff as well.

There are 5 units, each taking approximately 40 minutes which cover the following;

  • Core Principles of Teaching and Learning in the Clinical Learning Environment
  • Feedback in the Clinical Learning Environment
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Clinical Learning Environment
  • Student Engagement and Promoting a Culture of Belonging in the Clinical Learning Environment
  • Fundamentals of Work Based Assessment

The resource is available on the link above. You will need to register an account with the National Teaching Forum to access.
