Professor Gerard Boran, Head of the Clinical Biochemistry Unit

Welcome to the website of the Clinical Biochemistry Unit at TCD. With an office in the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences at Tallaght and clinical laboratories located at St. James’s Hospital, Tallaght University Hospital, and Naas General Hospital, we are the largest and most comprehensive provider of chemical pathology services in Ireland and also the only Academic Department of Clinical Biochemistry in the country.

Clinical Biochemistry is a discipline within Laboratory Medicine where biochemical measurements are used to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of disease. Virtually every hospital in-patient or out-patient will require a biochemistry investigation. Many patients require multiple investigations, serial testing and emergency investigations. General practitioners are also making increasing use of the service. Our two consultant chemical pathologists are supported by a team of clinical biochemists and medical scientists including medical and scientific trainees in the discipline spread across all sites.
