Current Research Projects

Leading PI for the following projects is Prof. Eleanor Molloy.

DRAGONFLY: Down Syndrome and Multiorgan Follow Up and Inflammatory Markers

This project aims to analyse the differences in immune function in children with Down Syndrome compared to those without. We will be looking at different markers of neutrophil activation and assessing their response to different medications designed to ameliorate the inflammatory response. PhD: Dr Rob McCarthy. Funder: NCHF

FUSCHIA: Fostering aUtonomy and Supporting independence in CHIldren with Down Syndrome to enable pArticipation in research and successful navigation of healthcare systems

Children with DS can have a complex healthcare journey and are often marginalised from research that impacts them. We aim to empower children with DS by involving them in projects that will support health literacy, identify research priorities and create tools to support a framework model of their care. PhD: Beth Corcoran. Funder: NCHF

Previous Research Projects

Leading PI for the following projects is Prof. Eleanor Molloy.

DREAM: Down syndRome, nEurodevelopment And Multiorgan outcomes

This project will explore multiorgan dysfunction including cardiac, haematological, endocrine and GI issues and their composite association with neurodevelopmental outcome in children with DS. PhD: Dr. Niamh Lagan. Funder: NCHF

DAISIE: Down Syndrome Assessment of Immune System and Inflammasome Expression Study

Explored inflammation and immune system dysfunction in children with Down syndrome, specifically the activity of the NLRP3 inflammasome, a key regulator of inflammation, and assess the effects of melatonin on inflammatory gene expression. The findings help to improve understanding of immune dysregulation and support development of future anti-inflammatory therapies.

DISCO: Down syndrome and Inflammation and Clinical Outcomes

Children with DS are at increased risk of infections and inflammatory conditions. Investigates immune function and development through clinical assessments, parent interviews, examinations, and blood testing. By identifying key immune markers and factors influencing inflammation, it aimed to improve understanding, support earlier prediction of health outcomes, and guide future therapies. PhD: Dr. Dean Huggard. Funder: NCHF
