This project represented a great opportunity for the CHPM to work collaboratively with the HSE and specialty stakeholders to inform consultant medical workforce planning to 2038.
The project began in December 2022 and involved estimating the demand for both surgical and medical consultants. The demand estimates were used to inform the number of higher specialist training places needed to build the workforce. Stakeholder engagement with each specialty informed the project from the start and was an invaluable resource to the research team. Projections were arrived at utilising an in-house built stock flow modelling tool and were informed, and approved, by specialty stakeholders.
Year 1 of the project focused on the surgical, and the dual trained medical specialties.
