Biography

Dr. Julie Broderick is an Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Physiotherapy. She was awarded a prestigious Health Research Board (HRB) Clinical Fellowship in 2008 and her doctoral work was entitled 'Physical Activity through the Cancer Trajectory'and a HRB Cochrane Fellowship in 2015. She also holds an honours degree (BSc.) in Physiotherapy, a Masters in Exercise Physiology (MSc.) and a Post-graduate Diploma in Statistics (H. Dip.) from Trinity College Dublin. She completed her Ph.D in Trinity College Dublin in 2012. She worked clinically for a number of years up to Senior Physiotherapy level in a variety of settings mainly in the cardio-respiratory area, and has held previous positions in clinical education and academia. The core focus of her research is the study of physical activity and physical functioning as a means to optimise physical and mental health across a range of chronic diseases. Her work focuses on the most functionally and life-limiting chronic conditions in the areas of oncology, cardio-respiratory and severe mental health. She is particularly interested in the application of research findings to optimise clinical exercise prescription across these conditions and in the use of novel technology and methods to increase physical activity for health benefits. Her recent work at the frontiers for her Discipline has investigated physical functioning measures in previously under-researched populations such as people experiencing homelessness. She has supervised a number of PhD and MSc students to successful completion and her team is exploring the interaction between social exclusion and chronic disease and how it manifests in physical health outcomes. She was commissioned to lead author a guideline of Physical Activity in mental health entitled 'Let's Get Active to improve Health and Wellbeing, Guidelines to support Mental Health Service Users to engage in Physical Activity' which helped change practice in this setting to include adjunctive physical activity alongside mainstream pharmacological and psychological approaches. Dr. Broderick was awarded a HRB Cochrane Fellowship in 2015 and as a result has developed a suite of specialist evidence synthesis skills. She has senior authored a range of systematic reviews, including 4 Cochrane reviews and she is interested in Overview methodology. As well as non-Cochrane reviews, she has conducted a number of Cochrane reviews to populate an Overview in the schizophrenia. She has served as an Associate Editor for the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group. In recognition of her accomplishments in Evidence Synthesis she was awarded a School of Medicine University of Maryland Bursary/Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field International Bursary. She designed and delivers a 5 ECTS module in Evidence Synthesis as part of the MSc in Cancer Survivorship. She is an invited Research Associate of Evidence Synthesis Ireland and she provides training on Evidence Synthesis Ireland methods courses since 2022. She has successfully supervised a number of Masters and PhD students to completion. She has been appointed as internal and external examiners for postgraduate research internally and externally. She has been invited to guest lecture in UCD on a yearly basis since 2009. She has presented her research widely and her work has been published in impactful journals such as Schizophrenia Bulleton, the British Journal of Sports Medicine, BMJ Open and as well as leading Physiotherapy journals. She has been a member of the Postgraduate Teaching and Learning Committee since 2016 and Faculty of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee since 2020. She served as a college tutor from 2018-2020. She was a Course Coordinator for the MSc in Cancer Survivorship from 2019-2021. She served as an Associate Director for Postgraduate Studies in the School of Medicine from 2021-2023. She was appointed Head of the Discipline of Physiotherapy in July 2023.
