Dr. Naomi Algeo

Biography

Dr Naomi Algeo was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Occupational Therapy at Trinity College Dublin in August 2026, following an established clinical career specialising in cancer rehabilitation and survivorship. She holds a PhD in Occupational Therapy from Trinity College Dublin, an MRes in Clinical Research from City, University of London, and a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy from the University of Galway.

Naomi"s research focuses on cancer rehabilitation and survivorship, with particular interests in participation in work and education following cancer, cancer-related fatigue and cognitive changes, self-management, and the rehabilitation needs of adolescents and young adults. Her work is strongly occupation-focused, with an emphasis on developing and evaluating clinically relevant interventions and models of care that support participation in meaningful life roles.

Her doctoral research, funded through an Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship, developed and evaluated an occupational therapy-led intervention to support women with breast cancer to return to work (CanWork). She subsequently received an Irish Cancer Society Allied Health Professional Cancer Research Award as Co-Principal Investigator to explore the education and employment support needs of adolescents and young adults following cancer. She is also a Co-Investigator on the HRB-funded CanWork trial evaluating a self-management programme to support women with breast cancer to return to work.

Prior to joining Trinity as faculty, Naomi worked at St James"s Hospital as Ireland"s first Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist in cancer survivorship. Her clinical work included developing a cancer-related fatigue clinic and implementing evidence-based self-management interventions within cancer services. This clinical background continues to underpin her research, with a strong emphasis on implementation, service development and impact.

Naomi contributes to cancer rehabilitation and occupational therapy nationally and internationally. She is Co-Founder and Chair of the National Acute Oncology Occupational Therapy Network and Co-Founder of the European Occupational Therapy Cancer Network. She represents the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland within COTEC and has contributed to national cancer initiatives through the HSE, National Cancer Control Programme and Irish Cancer Society. She has also sat on the World Health Organization Development Group for Cancer Rehabilitation.
