Essential Medical Statistics and Evidence Appraisal
Overview
In a world of data, statistics are vital to make sense of the world around us, to separate signal from noise and make informed decisions. However, to many of us the practice of biostatistics feels a little intimidating, rendering most of us apprehensive with data or even mislead by it. This course strives to demystify statistics and give learners confidence in using them as a tool to illuminate the noisy world we live in, from the communication of data to the ability to make inferences, whether conducting research or developing policy. Specifically, participants will improve their:
- Data Analysis Proficiency: Analysis / interpretation of medical data, enabling evidence-based decision-making.
- Critical Appraisal of Evidence: Assessment of the validity, relevance, and applicability of research findings to inform clinical / policy decisions.
- Statistical Literacy: Enhance understanding of key statistical concepts and methodologies, facilitating clear communication of statistical information and results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Research Design: Insights into designing robust medical research studies, including appropriate study designs, methods, and statistical techniques.
- Evidence-Based Practice and health policy: Strengthen skills in integrating statistical evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to improve health outcomes, and equipping policy makers with tools to analyse health data, supporting development of effective health policies and interventions.
By completing this CPD course, participants will:
- Be well-prepared and confident in applying basic statistical principles and evidence appraisal techniques in their professional roles, ultimately contributing to improved healthcare delivery and informed policy making.
- Able to parse evidence standards in health research and policy and assess research claims in context, with cognisance of strengths and weaknesses of healthcare data and evidence.
- Have improved statistical and data literacy regarding healthcare data and numerical reporting more generally.
Who is this Course For?
Medical doctors in practice and those interested in a research career, other healthcare workers with research interest, graduate students, health policy makers and service providers.
The course equips clinicians, healthcare workers, and policy makers with essential skills for effectively interpreting and applying statistical evidence in healthcare settings. This course will amplify the data analysis and statistical literacy of participants, strengthen their ability to appraise evidence, reinforce their ability to conduct reproducible high-quality research, and yield new proficiency in health-planning and evidence-based policy making.
