Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Medicine

Welcome the School of Medicine’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) webpage. The School of Medicine’s EDI Committee are responsible for creating an environment that is safe for, representative of and supportive to all staff and student members of our community. As Associate Director of EDI, I work with the School’s EDI Committee and Executive Committee to raise awareness of obstacles to EDI and propose and implement strategies to overcome these obstacles. Our work spans issues related to gender, age, sexual orientation, neurodiversity, race, religion, differing ability, socioeconomic status and more.
We were delighted to be awarded an Athena Swan Bronze Award in 2022, and are now developing further steps to improve gender equality across the School in advance of our 2026 Athena Swan application. Keep an eye out for updates on this work, and our other projects, here on this webpage.
The School of Medicine’s manifesto centres around the need for compassion, care and dignity throughout our work:
We are a School three centuries old.
We honour tradition, but tradition is not enough.
We stand for evidence,
in an age that mistrusts science.
We stand for equity and liberation,
in a world divided by wealth, race, and borders.
We stand for love and humanity,
when famine, war, and denial threaten dignity.
We stand for imagination,
so that medicine is not only science, but art, courage, and hope.
We will educate climate-literate, AI-fluent, culturally humble physicians.
We will research not only for discovery, but for justice.
We will welcome not only the privileged, but all who dream of healing.
We are not uniform, but we are united.
Our covenant is simple:
to serve life,
to protect truth,
to nurture community,
to shape the future.
