Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans - PEEPs
A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is advisable for students with a disability who require assistance during a building evacuation. If you have a physical, medical or sensory disability that affects your mobility in an emergency situation, it is advisable to consider putting a PEEP in place. The need for a PEEP will be identified in the Needs Assessment process carried out by the Disability Service. In conjunction with the Trinity Fire Officer and the building owners in which you are studying a PEEP will be put in place. A PEEP leaflet is available to download below.
A PEEP may be appropriate for disabled students and staff with:
- mobility difficulties
- sensory disabilities
- medical conditions
- fatigue-related conditions
- temporary injuries
- any condition that may affect safe evacuation during an emergency
The need for a PEEP is normally identified during the Needs Assessment process with the Disability Service.
Where required, the Disability Service will work with the Trinity Safety Officer to help put an appropriate evacuation plan in place.
A Personal Emergency Evacuation procedure leaflet is available to download and keep by clicking on this link: Evacuation Leaflet
To clarify any issues or concerns you may have in relation to safe evacuation, please contact the College Safety Officer Mr. Cathal Ryan – email CATHAL.RYAN@tcd.ie
PEEPs are developed on an individual basis and may vary depending on the student’s needs and the building environment.
How do I request a PEEP?
- Contact Disability Service by emailing askds@tcd.ie
- Discuss during Needs Assessment
- Review annually or if circumstances change
An individual Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan will fit in to the overall emergency plan for Trinity. To illustrate how this works, the basic procedures and information are detailed below:
Trinity - Personal Emergency Evacuation Procedure
- The same basic emergency procedures apply to all campus buildings.
- During an evacuation, follow steps 1 to 4.
- See location of evacuation equipment located in Trinity College buildings and local contact number below.
- Buildings with evacuation lifts (i.e. lifts that can operate during an evacuation) have a green ‘Emergency evacuation lift’ sign
- Assembly points vary refer to ‘Fire Action’ notices at entrance to each building

Step 1 — Evacuate or Move to a Refuge Area
- When the fire alarm sounds, follow the building evacuation procedure where possible.
- If assistance is required, move to the nearest designated refuge area and call for assistance.
- Trained evacuation chair operators and assistants will respond where required.
Step 2 — Assess the Situation
- Staff will assess the situation using available communication systems.
- Where safe to do so, remain in the refuge area until further assistance arrives.
- Use evacuation lifts where available and appropriate.
Step 3 — Move if Required
- If the refuge area becomes unsafe, move to another refuge area if possible and safe to do so.
Step 4 — Evacuate the Building
- If required, evacuate vertically and exit the building safely.
- If at any stage the situation becomes unsafe or uncertain, evacuate immediately where possible.
