The funded project, Vanadium Oxide (VO₂) Integrated Energy-efficient Window System (VIEWS), aims to develop advanced smart window coatings tailored for temperate climates such as Ireland.
The research will focus on tuning the VO₂ transition temperature to 25–30 °C using co-doping and stoichiometric control. Thin films will be fabricated via spray pyrolysis, a low-cost and scalable method compatible with industrial glass production.
In addition to material optimisation, the project will assess long-term durability and performance under both simulated and real-world conditions. The passive nature of VO₂ coatings, requiring no external power, offers a promising pathway to more energy-efficient and cost-effective building technologies compared to conventional electrochromic systems.
