Successful awarding of funding (€ 600k) under the SEAI National Energy RD&D Funding Programme
Project Title: Vanadium Oxide (VO2) Integrated Energy-efficient Window System (VIEWS)
The project focuses on tailoring the VO2 transition temperature to 25–30 °C, suitable for temperate climates like Ireland, by co-doping and fine-tuning stoichiometry. The films will be deposited using spray pyrolysis, a low-cost, scalable, atmospheric-pressure method compatible with industrial glass processing. This provides a key advantage over vacuum-based techniques typically used in VO2 research.
Alongside material optimisation, the project will evaluate long-term durability through multi-layer encapsulation and explore natural passivation strategies. Coatings will be tested under solar simulation and in real-world conditions. Compared to electrochromic windows, VO₂-based smart coatings operate passively, with no need for external power or control systems, offering better energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
