Job Title

Engineer for Biomedical Instrumentation (StaRes Project, Trinity College Dublin)

About the Project

This position is part of the StaRes project at Trinity College Dublin, funded by Enterprise Ireland.

StaRes develops novel nanoanalytics and imaging instruments for biomedical research.

The focus is on delivering production ready instruments for investigating molecular processes in human cells and tissues to support drug discovery in translational and precision medicine.

Who should apply

We are seeking an engineer who will own the mechanical subsystem of the instrument and who will also execute biological experiments, including sterile cell culture and sample preparation.

This is a hands-on role that combines mechanical system ownership with experimental biological work on a complex scientific instrument.

Role and Key Responsibilities

Develop control and automation systems for next generation biomedical research instruments. These tools enable cutting edge biomedical research and support applications in drug discovery, cancer therapy, and genetic medicine.

Mechanical system ownership.

Design, build, and integrate the mechanical parts of the add-on instrument with inverted microscopes, and produce the drawings and assemblies needed for fabrication, assembly, and adaptation to different microscopy platforms.

System setup and testing

Assemble the instrument, test stability, alignment, and reliability with non biological samples, and fix mechanical issues before biological work starts.

Biological experimentation

Perform sterile cell culture and prepare biological samples, follow biosafety procedures, contamination control, and laboratory SOPs, run imaging experiments on the validated system, and contribute to the development and refinement of experimental and sample preparation protocols.

Documentation and compliance

Prepare technical documentation, maintain design and test records, and support work aligned with international standards and future regulatory compliance.

Collaborate closely with Automation engineer and scientists to ensure integration of all subsystems, and be open to learning basic aspects of mechanical design where needed for system level integration.

Essential Qualifications

Education or equivalent experience: Degree or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field.

Mechanical Design: Hands on experience with mechanical design, prototyping, system integration, fabrication, and experimental testing. Proficient with CAD design tools (e.g., Altium, KiCAD, CATIA, Fusion 360, SolidWorks or similar).

Biomolecular Experience: Prior experience working with biological materials (molecular and cellular context) in laboratory environments.  Demonstrated experience working in sterile conditions and following laboratory safety procedures.

Collaboration & Work Ethics: Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment and to adapt across automation, and mechanical integration. Strong experimental discipline and documentation skills.

Desirable

  • Experience with biomedical devices, analytical instruments, or laboratory equipment.
  • Experience with microscopy or imaging systems.
  • Experience with polymers, soft materials, or materials testing.
  • Familiarity with regulated or quality-controlled laboratory environments.

Role scope clarification

This is not a design only mechanical role.

This is not a biology only role.

This is a hybrid engineering and experimental role with system level ownership.

Skills

  • Methodical and structured approach to decision making.
  • Demonstrates good work ethic and ability to meet assigned tasks, responsibilities, objectives, and timelines.
  • Strong project management, problem-solving, creative thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Strong communicator able to simplify complex technical topics.
  • Team-oriented and comfortable collaborating across disciplines.
  • Proactive learner who adapts quickly to new technologies

What we offer

Salary of €33,000 p.a., in line with current Government pay policy. and monthly pay scales (tcd.ie).

The chance to contribute to innovative research instrumentation with real biomedical impact.

A collaborative environment with strong potential for professional growth.

Application Process

To assist the selection process, applicants should submit a Curriculum Vitae and a Cover Letter (maximum one A4 page) that specifically addresses the following points:

Clearly outline relevant experience and how this experience has contributed to their knowledge.

Demonstrate, through past examples, their ability to work on their own initiative and to resolve problems.

Applicants who do not address these requirements in their cover letter will not be considered at the shortlisting stage.
