MSc in Energy Science Trinity College Dublin, in collaboration with the Energy Institute, KEO Sustainability + Environment, the Faculty of STEM, and the AMBER Research Centre are delighted to invite you to our 4th Annual Energy Science 2025 seminar.
This event will feature a number of speakers from both agencies and industry to discuss their company and our energy space in Ireland and internationally.
The focus of the seminar is to promote Energy Science and sustainability, exchange information and to provide the Energy Science class students the opportunity to
i) learn about Energy Science from the perspective of different companies
ii) develop international contact networks in energy storage
iii) discuss with our hosts related issues and concerns across Energy Science.
We have an exciting range of speakers including ESB Networks, KEO International Consultants, SEAI, EPA, Electroroute, NEG8 Carbon, Eaton and Clarke Energy, EirGrid and Statkraft to discuss their mission and our energy landscape in Ireland and internationally.

On the day we will showcase 28 Energy Science research projects and we will present the KEO Energy Sustainability Research award.

Dr. Emily Byrne
Energy analyst at Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)
Emily is part of a team that analyses data from the National Energy Balance as well as monthly energy data. She contributes to the stats team’s publication portfolio (Energy in Ireland, First Look short notes, data visualisation etc.) and reports to the European ODYSSEE project. She has past experience in both academic and commercially focused energy research and related areas within the Chemistry field.

Dr. Darragh O'Neill
Senior Manager for Research Strategy at the Environmental Protection Agency
Darragh leads the development and implementation of the EPA’s research strategy, the management of funding programmes as well as national and international partnerships.

Cathal Heneghan
Associate Director at KEO/Meehan Green
KEO/Meehan Green provide sustainability consulting, training and contractor support to the built environment.
Cathal is an industry expert in whole building life cycle carbon assessment, which includes embodied carbon in buildings, energy management and measuring performance.
Graduate Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Master of Science (MSc), Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building Oxford Brookes University.

Laura Nagle
Grid Engineer at Statkraft Ireland
Laura is a Grid Engineer working with the onshore wind and solar team. Her role involves the management, optimisation and delivery of the grid connection process across development and construction projects. Prior to joining Statkraft Ireland, Laura spent two years working on the project team at an Irish solar farm developer.
Laura holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and an MEng in Energy Systems Engineering from University College Dublin. During her studies, Laura researched the offshore wind potential on the west coast of Ireland and presented her results at the Wind Energy Ireland Offshore Conference in 2022.

Seyed Mahdi Akbarimoosavi MEng
Mechanical & CFD Engineer at NEG8 Carbon
Mahdi has held roles in the oil industry, projects include analysing solar collectors at Shiraz solar power plant, researching thermocavitation cooling at UCR. With over 12 years of experience spanning academia and industry, Mahdi has excelled as a researcher, teacher, mechanical design engineer, and computational fluid dynamics engineer.

Keelan Glennane MSc, BEng
Innovation Specialist on the Future Opportunities at ESB Generation & Trading
Keelan’s current role involves promoting innovation culture both within the organisation and externally, and given her background, she dedicates a lot of her time towards projects related to hydrogen and its derivatives to decarbonise the energy sector.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering from UCD and a Masters in Finance from Trinity College. Throughout her studies, Keelan focused on the energy industry, conducting research on hydrogen production optimisation and developing a total cost of ownership model for green hydrogen production, distribution, and transportation.

Dr. John Ging
Head of Interconnection at EirGrid & Director at Coreso SA
Responsible for the operation of regulated HVDC interconnectors in Ireland, as well as market and power system operational readiness for future HVDC interconnectors and offshore.
Experienced Operations and Planning Manager with a background in Renewable Energy, Smart Grid solutions, HVDC, Power System Operations.
Graduated from University College Dublin with a BE (Hons.) and PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

John Curley
General manager – Clarke Energy.
Graduate in Marine Engineering form Munster Technological University. Career in Solar Turbines. Operation Manager in Petrofac.
Clarke Energy specialise in gas engine power stations and combined heat and power technology. Renewable energy generation and storage technologies as hybrids or microgrids. Biogas upgrading solutions for gas grid injection.

Shane Duane
Senior Lead Analyst – Interconnection at EirGrid
Shane leads the market readiness on cross-border capacity calculation for the 700 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) Celtic interconnector which will link France and the Single Electricity Market (SEM) of Ireland and Northern Ireland in 2026.

Dr. Scott McDonald
Lead Data Scientist Eaton’s Centre for Intelligent Power
Scott is part of the Buildings as a Grid team, he works on forecasting and optimisation problems related to commercial buildings and microgrids.
He graduated from Ulster University in 2016 with a PhD in Machine Learning. His PhD work focused on applying computational intelligence approaches to financial time series problems.

Sarah Wilson
GIS Analyst at Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)
GIS Analyst, Sarah Wilson is a member of the Energy Statistics Team at Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), with a focus on GIS (geographic information systems) analysis and web services. Sarah’s GIS and mapping work at SEAI provides data and insights on Ireland’s energy transition across the national, regional, and community levels.

Stephen Gannon
Head of Future Power Markets at EirGrid
Stephen is Head of Future Power Markets at EirGrid, with several years’ experience as senior commercial specialist for the East West Interconnector. EirGrid develops, manages and operates the electricity grid in Ireland.
He holds a Master's degree, Civic Design, and P. Grad. Dip, Sustainable Energy Trinity College Dublin

Enda Molloy
Head of flexibility origination team at ElectroRoute
Enda Molloy’s team design bespoke trading strategies to enable the delivery of batteries and other flexible assets crucial for achieving net zero.

Cathal O’Cleirigh
Senior Energy Analyst at Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)
As well as helping build-out Ireland’s national energy balance, Cathal is a national expert in the Renewable Energy Directive and the Energy Efficiency Directive that drive many of Ireland’s energy and emission targets out to 2030. He’s really well placed to give a ‘big picture’ overview of where Ireland is, and where Ireland needs to go, to satisfy its binding energy targets.
