Microsoft 365 for Students - FAQ

What is Microsoft 365?

IT Services are pleased to be able to offer all students the Microsoft 365 suite of software, free of charge. Microsoft 365 can be used online or downloaded on up to five devices, including Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone. Applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Lync, OneNote, Access, and Publisher.

Who can access the service?

All current Trinity students can access the service. You will lose access once you are finished your studies in Trinity and your Trinity computer account expires.

Can I download the software?

You can use Microsoft 365 online or install it on up to five devices including your computer or mobile device.

To use it online, open a web browser and navigate to office.tcd.ie. Then, sign in with your Trinity email address, in the form username@tcd.ie, and your Trinity password.

To install it on your Windows PC or Mac, log into Microsoft 365 online at office.tcd.ie. Once logged in, you can hit the installation button to download the suite onto your computer.

For iPhone/iPad you can install Microsoft 365 from the App Store and for Android devices you can install Microsoft 365 from the Google Play Store.

Microsoft 365 is a self-supported service.

What is OneDrive?

Microsoft 365 also includes OneDrive. This is a form of personal cloud storage where your data is stored on the internet and available from any internet-connected device. Students can use up to 1TB (1000GB) of storage with a maximum file size of 2GB.

Does this replace MyZone?

No, you should still use your Mail, Calendar and Drive provided in MyZone as your main productivity tools for your studies.

How do I access Microsoft 365?

IT Services have collaborated with Microsoft to give you access to Microsoft 365 using your Trinity username & password. You can access Microsoft 365 at https://login.microsoftonline.com/.

You logon using your Trinity email address (in the form username@tcd.ie) as your username and your Trinity network login password as your password.

What happens if I change my password?

If you need to change your Trinity network login password then you should do this as normal. Your password will automatically change for the Microsoft 365 service within about 3 minutes and you can use your new password to login to Microsoft 365.

How long will I have access to this service for?

You will have access to Microsoft 365 for the duration of your studies in Trinity. You will lose access once you are finished your studies in Trinity and your Trinity computer account expires.

Does the IT Service Desk provide support for Microsoft 365?

The IT Service Desk can help you if you are having problems logging into Microsoft 365. Remember you use your University email address and network login password. Once you have logged in, Microsoft 365 is self-service. You can obtain extensive information on installing the free office apps on your PC, Mac and other mobile devices from Microsoft.

What will happen to my data when I leave Trinity?

Your data is yours. Before you finish your studies and your Trinity account expires you should download your Microsoft 365 data - for example, your documents on OneDrive - and save it to another location. You will receive reminders about this before your Trinity computer account expires.
