Installing and Enabling Panopto

Find out how to install, launch and enable Panopto to record using the Panopto Recorder in a lecture theatre, office PC or personal computer. Before you can use Panopto to record videos in Blackboard, you will need to link the Panopto Lecture Capture Link to each Module that you'll want to record videos for. These steps must be carried out for each Module and will provide you with a link to run the Panopto Lecture Capture Software.

Recording

Whether working from your office desktop, lecture theatre or a home setup, Panopto offers three distinct methods for capturing and broadcasting your teaching material. You can access all of these by clicking the button at the top-left of your portal

Panopto Capture (Browser-Based Recorder). A web-based recording tool that runs directly inside your internet browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox). Best for: Quick updates, brief video announcements, or standard lectures recorded from home where you don't want to install software.

  • How it works: Click Create, select Panopto Capture, grant your browser permission to use your camera/microphone, and start recording. It uploads automatically the moment you hit stop.

Panopto Application Recorder (Desktop Software). The full Panopto desktop application (Panopto for Windows / Mac) is installed locally on your computer. Best for: Complex, multi-source lecture captures. Use this if you need to record multiple screens simultaneously, embed native PowerPoint slides cleanly, capture physical document cameras, or record offline without an active internet connection.

  • How it works: Click Create, select Panopto for Windows/Mac to launch the software and select your primary inputs (audio/video).

How to Record and Webcast (Live Streaming).

A live-broadcast feature that streams your lecture over the internet in real-time while simultaneously recording it for on-demand viewing later. Best for: Live remote lectures, synchronous virtual events, or distance learning modules where students need to watch or interact live from home.

  • How it works: Open your Panopto Desktop Application, choose your folder, and check the Webcast box in the upper right corner before clicking Record. You can generate a "Waiting Room" link in advance to share with students via email or Blackboard before the session begins.
