Site Licences

Staff and students can avail of the Trinity purchased site licences for certain software. See details of site licensing options below:

Site licences available to staff and students

Staff and currently enrolled students can avail of ArcGIS under the Trinity site licence. Faculties, researchers and students may use ArcGIS for teaching, research and learning.  Details of the agreement are available on the CHEST website. To obtain a copy of the installation files, staff and students must fill out and submit the ArcGIS request form, having first accepted the terms. Submission of the form automatically records an enquiry with the IT Service Desk and they will then email you with the ArcGIS installation instructions within 3-5 working days.

ArcGIS Desktop

Please note ArcGIS Desktop was retired at the end of July 2023; however there are limited licences available until 31st July 2024.

Please refer to Top 5 tips for migrating away from ArcMap to ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro for more information.

Students and faculty staff can avail of a license for ArcGIS Desktop. This enables you to install ArcGIS onto a Windows computer in a standalone environment, not connected to the License Server.

Existing licences will expire 1 year after activation, or at the end of July 2024 - whichever date comes first.

If you wish to obtain a licence for ArcGIS Desktop then, please submit a request for a ArcGIS Desktop licence.

If you wish to access ArcGIS in the IT Services Computer Rooms, instructions are available to install and access the software.

ArcGIS Pro

ArcGIS Pro is available for access to staff and students.

ArcGIS Pro will only install on a Windows computer. It is not designed for macOS. However as part of the ArcGIS Pro package, there is a limited functionality sub-package known as 'ArcGIS Online'. ArcGIS Online will work on any operating system including macOS.

If you wish to obtain ArcGIS Pro, then please submit a request for a ArcGIS Pro 1-year licence.

MATLAB, the language of technical computing, is a programming environment for algorithm development, data analysis, visualization, and numeric computation. Simulink is a graphical environment for simulation and Model-Based Design of multidomain dynamic and embedded systems. MathWorks produces nearly 100 additional products for specialized tasks such as data analysis and image processing.

Trinity College Dublin has a Campus-Wide License for MATLAB, Simulink, and add-on products. Faculty, researchers, and students may use these products for teaching, research, and learning; please note that commercial use, including non-academic research, of MathWorks products is not permitted under the College site licence. The license allows installation of the products on university equipment, including classroom and lab installations, and on personally owned computers.

Licence Cost

The site licence is funded by departments across college contributing to the cost based on usage. There is no initial charge for downloading and using MATLAB software under the College site licence for the current academic year. However, you should be aware that:

  • Records are kept for each copy of the software that is downloaded from MathWorks.
  • Based on the number of downloads your department may be contacted and requested to make a financial contribution towards the cost of the renewal of the site licence for the next academic year. You may therefore retrospectively be asked by your department to justify your download of MathWorks products and their usage in your academic research and teaching and learning activity.
  • For guidance the minimum departmental financial contribution would be approximately €650.
