Accommodations in Blackboard Ultra

College Late Submission of Assessments (Extensions) Policy outlines the procedures, expectations, and consequences for submitting assessments after the designated deadline.

Students who have a Learning Educational Needs Summary (LENS) report with flexible assessment deadlines are automatically granted a one-week extension, if practical. In cases where an extension is not possible, the student must be notified, and an alternative arrangement will be considered. When these students are working in groups, the policy states it is preferable to grant the extension to the entire group.

In Blackboard Ultra, accommodations can be set for individual students to provide extended due dates or additional time for completing assessments. When applied, students with an accommodation are identified on the module with a purple marker in the Class Register and in the Gradebook. These accommodation settings are linked to the student and automatically apply to all assignments and tests within the module. If one or more students with accommodations are in a group, all students in that group inherit the accommodation for that assessment activity. Once an accommodation has been granted to a student they cannot be granted an exception for assignments on the module.

There are two types of accommodation you can grant students on your Blackboard Ultra module and students can be granted either or both accommodations:

Due Date Accommodation - Students may submit work after the due date and their work won't be labelled as late in the gradebook.

Time Limit Accommodation - Students have more time to finish their work during timed assessments.

  4. Locate the student and click on the three-dot ellipsis next to their name. A small drop-down menu appears, click on Accommodations. This opens the Accommodations panel on the right of the page.

  5. In the Accommodations panel you can select Due date accommodation and/or Time limit accommodation. These settings will apply to all graded activity on the module.

Guidance on how to set up Due Date Accommodations and Time Limit Accommodations are provided below.

Students with a due date accommodation may submit work any time after the due date and their work won't be labelled as late in the gradebook. Due Date accommodations do not automatically provide a one-week extension to the student's assignment due date on the module.  It is advised that the instructor communicate the new due-date and time to the student. The Instructor will need to confirm that any student with a Due Date Accommodation submitted their assignment on time.

To grant a Due Date Accommodation click on the Due Date Accommodation tick box and click save.

ExampleAn assignment on your module has a due date of 10.11.2025. A student with a Due Date Accommodation can submit their assignment after this date and time and their work will not be flagged as late in the gradebook.

Students with a Time Limit Accommodation have more time to finish their work during timed assessments. This increased time limit is communicated to the student when they access the assessment. Time Limit accommodations do not apply to discussions.

This accommodation is used to grant students a custom percentage of extra time or unlimited time.

To grant a Time Limit Accommodation click on the Time Limit Accommodation tick box and select either Custom percentage or Unlimited time.
