Support for Teaching
The Library subscribes to a large number of e-journals and e-books and it is possible to link to the content of these resources through the use of hyperlinks.
Please follow the instructions below and do not insert PDFs of articles directly into Blackboard - this may be a breach of copyright/licence agreements.
Copyright restrictions apply to electronic materials and electronic resources are bound by licence conditions. For further information on terms and conditions for the use of electronic resources, please see the Copyright page.
In many cases, it is possible to link to specific journal articles. The methods of linking may be complex and may vary between providers. Also, it is important to check links from time to time as the links may not be stable.
See below for linking with Digital Object Identifiers (DOI). If there is no DOI, insert the string: http://elib.tcd.ie/login?url= in front of the required reference,

In many cases, it is possible to create a stable link to an article using a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). This is a unique number that can be used to identify a specific piece of electronic material. A DOI is guaranteed never to change, to provide a permanant reference for electronic documents. This number can be used in a URL to provide a constant link to the content. For additional advice on linking at article level, please contact the Electronic Resources Digital Services Librarian.

- Add the DOI number given by a publisher/provider of an article e.g., http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.tet.2008.09.083
- To ensure the article is accessible off-campus add the URL string http://elib.tcd.ie/login?url= before the DOI

A short video on the importance of forwarding reading lists to the Library is available. The Library and Trinity Inclusive Curriculum have collaborated to develop a set of good practice guidelines for reading lists. Following these guidelines will help the Library ensure all resources are available and students can use reading lists more effectively.
Please contact the relevant Subject Librarian to have multiple copies of teaching material added to the Library before commencing new, or updating existing, courses.
To make the process of updating material smoother, please only forward lists of new or updated texts extracted from reading lists, rather than the entire list. To this end, please consult the Online Catalogue before submitting requests for new purchases.
Useful information to forward includes:
- Whether the text is new, an updated edition, or requiring more copies
- Title, author, edition, publisher, ISBN, and price in euro or pounds
- Name of course
- Number of students
- Status of students (undergraduate/postgraduate)
- Number of copies required
Please note, unless the Library is informed in advance, it cannot guarantee items on reading lists will be available to students. The onus is on teaching staff to ensure suitable material for their students is available before referencing it during teaching.
The Library reserves the right to not purchase material due to budget constraints, the amount of material already purchased for a course, similar items being available, or any other reason.
Subject to conditions, the Library welcomes suggestions from staff of new individual items to purchase. Please consult the Online Catalogue before submitting requests for new purchases to ensure the Library does not yet possess a copy.

The Library does not handle subscriptions for individual staff. Contact details are available on the vendors' sites either directly or through the Library homepage.
However, staff that feel the Library would benefit from a subscription to databases and journals not currently held by the Library should contact the relevant Subject Librarian.
Staff can request that existing texts held by the Library be transferred to Short Loan, if they believe students would benefit from a copy always being available in the Library, or request a new copy is purchased to be placed there.
Lecturers can request that photocopies of items may be placed into the Short Loan (Counter Reserve) Collection. Not more than 5% of any work (book, annual output of a journal, pamphlet) should be included in any calendar year, unless the copyright holder has granted permission for more than 5% to be used. The Counter Reserve Collection Copyright Declaration (PDF 11KB) form should be completed and returned with the photocopy to the relevant Subject Librarian for inclusion in the collection.
Staff publishing articles or undertaking research may be interested in the Impact Factor of particular journals. This information is provided by Journal Citation Reports as part of the ISI Web of Knowledge platform. The SCOPUS database also provides similar information. Tours are arranged for students when they register, in order to obtain a working knowledge of the Library. New staff may request personalised tours by contacting the relevant Subject Librarian.
Visiting academics, who are attached to a School or Department for a short period of time, may register as visiting readers. Wireless network (Wi-Fi) access may be requested by a sponsoring department - see the relevant IT Services page.
The Library provides embedded Information Literacy courses to train students in the use of the Library (Online Catalogue, database searching etc.); however, staff who feel their students may benefit from extra Library instruction should contact the relevant Subject Librarian.
Staff requiring such training should contact the relevant Subject Librarian to arrange a personalised session. Staff requiring EndNote training should attend one of the organised group sessions before requesting individual training.

New academic staff should allow sufficient time for data from the Staff Office to transfer to the Library system (usually 24 hours) before attempting to borrow material. Once this has been completed, the correct card will be issued from the Staff Office.
