Reader Types

Undergraduate Students

Degree Students, Certificate Students, & Foundation Students

With an account in good standing, these students may borrow:

  • 10 General Lending items (LEN, S-LEN, SJ), for an initial loan period of four weeks. If the item is required by several readers, a shorter loan period will apply
    • DVDs can be borrowed as part of the 10 items, but have a loan period of two days and cannot be renewed

They may also borrow, for use within the Library:

  • 10 items from storage
  • 5 Inter-Library Loans from another library
  • 5 Short Loan items, for five hours or until the Library's Service Counter closes, whichever is sooner

Postgraduate Students

Higher Degree Postgraduate Students, Higher Diploma Students, & Postgraduate Diploma Students

With an account in good standing, these students may borrow:

  • 10 General Lending items (LEN, S-LEN, SJ), for an initial loan period of four weeks. If the item is required by several readers, a shorter loan period will apply
    • DVDs can be borrowed as part of these 10 items, but have a loan period of two days and cannot be renewed
  • 10 Legal Deposit items, for an initial loan period of four weeks. If the item is required by several readers, a shorter loan period will apply
  • 10 Inter-Library Loans from another library (these may be restricted to use only in the Library)

They may also borrow, for use within the Library:

  • 5 Short Loan items, for five hours or until the Library's Service Counter closes, whichever is sooner

Students with Special Borrowing Privileges

By default, undergraduate students registered with College's Disability Service will have the same borrowing entitlements as other undergraduates. However, as the request of the Disability Service, these students can be given Special Borrowing Privileges, which are the same borrowing entitlements as postgraduate students.

Staff

Staff are required to sign the Library Bond in order to borrow. The Library Bond is an indemnity to pay €650 in the situation that books are damaged or not returned. The sum is not paid in advance.

Bond forms are either obtained at the Staff Office, or at the Admissions Counter, Berkeley Library during its opening hours, and must be completed and returned to the Admissions Counter.

With an account in good standing, staff may borrow:

  • 10 General Lending items (LEN, S-LEN, SJ), for an initial loan period of four weeks. If the item is required by several readers, a shorter loan period will apply
    • DVDs can be borrowed as part of these 10 items, but have a loan period of two days and cannot be renewed
  • 20 Legal Deposit items, for an initial loan period of 12 weeks. If the item is required by several readers, a shorter loan period will apply
  • 20 Inter-Library Loans from another library (these may be restricted to use only in the Library)

They may also borrow, for use within the Library:

  • 5 Short Loan items, for five hours or until the Library's Service Counter closes, whichever is sooner

Visiting Readers

Visiting readers may consult, but not borrow, Library material.

  • 5 Short Loan items, for five hours or until the Library's Service Counter closes, whichever is sooner
