New Borrowing Entitlements and Loan Periods - for items borrowed after 10 September 2018
From 10 September 2018 the Library’s borrowing entitlements for staff and students are being substantially revised and increased. The aim of the new rules is to:
- Allow all staff and students to borrow more books, and for longer, than before, if they are not required by other readers
- Put in place procedures to recall a book in high demand more quickly and easily
In addition, our penalties for non-return of items have been updated to work in tandem with the new rules to encourage the return of high-demand items.
Major Differences to the Previous System
- Our General Lending items - mainly items with the shelfmark LEN, S-LEN, and SJ - are now available for all eligible staff and students to borrow
- Staff can now renew items they have on loan - and indeed must, if they want to keep the item
- As loans can now last for longer, a robust recall system has been put in place. This means that loan periods can be shortened by other readers. All borrowers need to be aware that they may receive e-mails informing them that the due date on an item has changed, and/or check their due dates via the My Library Account webpage
- If an item is in high demand, the borrowing time will either be limited to two days (material from the open shelves) or the item will only be available to be consulted within the reading room (material from storage). This shorter loan period will be communicated to readers when they borrow the item
- Items that are overdue, or that have been requested by another reader, must be returned to the relevant Service Counter. They cannot be returned via a FastLane machine
