Assistant Professor Development Programme
Performance Management and Probation
Performance management is an integral part of academic life at the University and supports ongoing professional development, career progression and academic success. While all academic staff participate in the performance management process, there is a particular emphasis on development, support and review during the first four years of an academic appointment.
The performance management process includes:
- Setting objectives in consultation with the Head of School. Objectives should be agreed and submitted using the Objectives Form. Staff who choose not to use the standard form should ensure that all required information is included in their alternative document.
- Regular development conversations with the Head of School and Mentor to review progress, discuss achievements, and provide guidance across the areas of Research, Teaching and Learning, and Engagement.
- Performance review and probation, providing an opportunity to reflect on progress, identify future development needs, and receive constructive feedback.
- As part of the probation and performance review process, academic staff will be asked to complete a self-assessment and probation documentation through the Research Support System (RSS). (register here). A dedicated masterclass is available to provide guidance on using the RSS and preparing for probation and review discussions.
