Annual Reviews for Assistant Professors on Tenure Track

In 2016 the University Council and Trinity College Board approved the introduction of a tenure-track system as the primary mechanism by which the university will recruit entry-level academics. The first roll-out of this policy was through the Ussher II Scheme, with recruitment of almost 40 Ussher Assistant Professors in 2016/17 academic year.

What is Tenure Track and who does it apply to?

Appointments under the Tenure Track scheme are made on an initial five-year fixed-term contract, with a view to permanency subject to performance. These types of contracts are normally offered to Assistant Professors other than those employed for a defined term or specific purpose. It does not apply to staff hired at the grade of Associate Professor or above.

The University anticipates that the initial fixed-term appointment will lead to a tenured role/permanency subject to a satisfactory performance managed in accordance with the University’s policies:

During the tenure track period, the Assistant Professor will receive regular feedback from their Head of School. In addition, new Assistant Professors will be assigned an experienced mentor and will be invited to avail of learning and development supports provided by HR Learning and Organisation Development and CAPSL. Incremental progression along the salary scale occurs on a yearly basis, subject to performance.

Continuation beyond the initial term, through the issuing of a permanent contract, will be based on the completion of four-year tenure period consisting of:

  • one-year probation period
  • two years of annual reviews at the School level, and
  • Final Tenure Review following fourth year in appointment.

At that point there will be a decision either to grant tenure at the end of year 4 (equivalent to permanency) or to end the contract at the end of year 5.
