Saif Malik, Assistant Professor in Computer Science, made Cricket Leinster history on Saturday 17 May with an unbeaten 211 off just 92 balls against Mullingar 2s in a 40-over Division 10 match at College Park.
Malik’s double century was the first for a Trinity 2nd XI since 1876 and the second double century ever made for Trinity 2nds, following the 266 made by George Kenny against Rathmines School P&P at College Park in 1876.
Mailk's historic double century was also the first by any Trinity side since 1938 and the highest score in Leinster Cricket competition since 2022. His innings powered DUCC 2s to a 198-run win, continuing the team’s strong start to the season under captain Aidan Muller.
Malik batted no 3 and came in with the score on 55 in the twelfth over and stayed there until the innings closed on 356-4, scoring 211 in 28 overs at the wicket. He hit 9 sixes and 28 fours and faced 92 balls. The total of 356 runs is also a club record in limited-overs cricket.
Malik is playing his first season with Trinity, having joined the college staff in August 2024 as an Assistant Professor in Computer Science, and made his debut against Finglas two weeks ago, scoring 1, and made 58 last week against Dundalk. After completing his undergraduate degree in Islamabad, Pakistan, and his doctorate in North Dakota, Malik spent five years working in Estonia, where he played cricket for the Tallinn Hippos. While in Estonia in 2019 he scored the first double century in that country’s league, scoring 205 not out against Eesti Tigers.
Meanwhile, Trinity Sport scholar Matthew Humphreys and Trinity alumni and former Sport scholar Lorcan Tucker have been named in Ireland Men’s squads for the one-day international (ODI) and T20I series against West Indies Men. The series begins today, 21 May, at Clontarf with a three-match ODI series followed by three T20Is in June at Bready. Tucker has been named vice-captain, with Paul Stirling as captain for both squads.
2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year for Trinity Cricket with historic record-breaking performances alongside international call-ups.
