At the end of August, DUAC athletes went up to Galway for the intervarsity finals and subsequent head-to-head matches. Hopes were high for our archers, as they had all been doing exceptionally well in the other intervarsities or IVs hosted by DCU, UL, and DU. The club’s overall performance this summer had already been a real highlight, and the finals in Galway could solidify this success.
Despite a forecast predicting rain and strong gusts of wind, the weather was surprisingly mellow, with nothing more than a slight drizzle; ideal for everyone to fully focus on performing their best. This worked out in our favour, as the day saw multiple people breaking their personal records, people breaking into new bow categories, and gaining pins as recognition for their PBs. After a very strong last IV with fierce competition, the cumulative scores throughout the season ended in three gold and two bronze medals for DUAC’s archers. The golds were reserved for Jack Leahy in Barebow Advanced Open, Maria Sofia Casabiana in Recurve Beginner Female, and Emmet Morrin in Recurve Intermediate Open. Alyssa Baker got bronze in Recurve Beginner Female, as did Charlotte Claeys in Compound Women.
Running on the high from these results, our archers locked in for the head-to-heads, and all shot their very best, and we had multiple incredibly close calls, with only single-point differences. Consequently, we are incredibly proud to report that every DU archer who competed in the head-to-heads came away with a medal. All DUAC archers proved deserving of their league standing, defending it strongly, and Felix Gibbins (Barebow Beginner Open) and Charlotte Claeys even rose in the rankings, getting a bronze and silver medal, respectively.
Building on the momentum from the success in the intervarsities over the past months, we’re looking forward to the end of the outdoor season with the outdoor nationals in October. In the wake of the nationals, we’ll then be shifting our focus towards the indoor season, traditionally kicking off with the Campanile Cup hosted by us. Also coming up are the first indoor IV, hosted by DCU, and Kings of Archery, an international competition in the Netherlands.
