Biography

Dr Sonia O'Kelly PhD, H. Dip, B.Sc. (Cur.). B.A. (Mod), RM, RGN, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, with teaching responsibilities across the BSc Undergraduate Midwifery Programme, the Higher Diploma in Midwifery Programme, and several shared modules with other Nursing disciplines. She brings significant invaluable clinical experience in hospital and community settings to her current academic role. Sonia completed both her undergraduate general nursing degree and her Higher Diploma in midwifery degree in TCD and also holds an undergraduate degree in geography from TCD. She is currently in the second year of a master"s programme in human factors, for which her research focus is examining the ethical implications around informed consent for episiotomy during childbirth through a human factors and patient safety lens. Her Doctoral thesis examined the impact of a novel antenatal education programme on postnatal recovery from perineal wounds, and she continues to be motivated by the impact of education on both student and patient outcomes. Her research focus is primarily on student and patient education, expectations, and informed consent.
