One of the new interdisciplinary research projects to receive support from Research Ireland under the Collaborative Alliances for Societal Challenges (COALESCE) programme, is MAMMI and the workplace: Enhancing female equity, parental resilience, and maternal health in the workplace, led by Dr Sinéad Monaghan and Professor Déirdre Daly of Trinity College Dublin.
The project builds on the established MAMMI (Maternal health and Maternal Morbidity in Ireland) longitudinal study, extending its focus to examine how mothers and parents navigate workplace structures, organisational cultures, and career progression following parenthood. Combining long-term health data, qualitative research and policy analysis, it aims to inform more equitable workplace practices and policies that better support maternal health and parental resilience.
Dr Sinéad Monaghan, Associate Professor in International Business & Global Strategy at Trinity Business School, and Professor Déirdre Daly, Professor in Midwifery at the School of Nursing & Midwifery, said the award highlights the growing recognition of maternal health as both a public health and workplace issue.
“We’re thrilled to receive this award from Taighde Éireann, as it signifies the importance of exploring long-term maternal and women’s health and their occupational engagement, or disengagement.
As well as long term health, the project will explore the impact of becoming a mother, or a parent, on engagement with their career, job, and workplace.
This follow-up study will also analyse how maternity and paternity policy support parents in Ireland.
Having been co-designed with women, it highlights the areas of research that women want and need to be investigated with a clear focus on pathways to impact.”
