ANNOUNCEMENT

The School of Nursing and Midwifery, together with St. James Hospital, is offering one part-time funded scholarship for entry into the PhD programme in March or September 2026

The scholarships are open to nurses and midwives who are not currently registered for a PhD but have a strong desire to explore new practices and knowledge through evidence-based approaches. The Joint PhD Scholarship offers a pathway for nurses to conduct research that advances innovation in practice within St James’s Hospital and its associated partners, for example, by improving the integration of care, services, or health systems.

The scholarships provide opportunities for suitably qualified nurses to pursue a Structured PhD, which must align with one of the nursing strategy pillars at St James’s Hospital and the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI) research centre in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, which offers leading expertise.

Areas of subject focus

The above are suggested areas, but the list is not exhaustive. Other fields of study that aim to enhance health outcomes for service users of St James’s Hospital will also be considered.

Prospective students are advised that they must secure the agreement and support of an academic in the school who will serve as the primary supervisor for their PhD for the application to be eligible for review. The research proposal will be developed in consultation with the primary supervisor. In addition, a formal application must be submitted to TCD for consideration in the TCD PhD programme.

The deadline for applications is 4th December 2025 at 12 noon Irish time.
