Course Overview

The P.Grad.Dip. in Health and Safety in Construction is an exciting one-year course designed to familiarise civil engineers and other construction professionals with Health and Safety legislation and practice. In addition, the course will provide them with the knowledge necessary to perform various supervisory and advisory health and safety roles.

In general, the issue of Health and Safety related competency in design and on construction sites is comprehensively dealt with in this programme. Risk Management is a major element of the course. The course has been accredited by IOSH and students successfully completing the programme will be eligible to apply for graduate level membership of IOSH. It is also approved for CPD by Engineers Ireland.

This course is designed for postgraduate students who hold a bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field and who are interested in pursuing a career in health and safety management within the construction industry.

The programme is suitable for those who want to develop their knowledge and skills in construction health and safety management, risk assessment, and accident prevention. It is also suitable for those interested in understanding the regulatory framework for construction health and safety, including the relevant legislation and standards.

This programme is also ideal for professionals who are already working in the construction industry or related areas and who are seeking to upskill or change their career path towards health and safety management within the construction industry.

This course enables Civil and Structural Engineers, Architects, Project Managers, Contract Managers, and other construction professionals to become familiar with the latest developments in Health and Safety legislation and practice, with graduates pursuing Project Supervisor, Health and Safety Coordinator, Safety Advisor, and Safety Officer roles.

Course Structure

Lectures are normally held on Friday evening 7pm - 10pm and Saturday 9.30am-12.30pm each week throughout two semesters (September to April). In addition to attending lectures, participants are required to submit coursework as part of the students’ assessment.

Course Content

Course topics include: health and safety legislation and frameworks; risk management for design and construction; construction regulations; other relevant legislation; health and safety training; health and safety management; safety statements for employers; regulations and controls for physical and chemical agents; and health and welfare issues.

Admission Requirements

An Honours degree in Engineering or related discipline is required. Applications are assessed based on academic qualifications, together with the number of years of relevant experience.

A candidate may be interviewed to establish their suitability for the course.
