This module places emphasis on understanding the physiological changes in pregnancy, birth and the puerperium and developing the foundational skills for midwifery practice.

The aim of this module is to offer students a perspective of birth, pregnancy and motherhood drawn from the disciplines of psychology, sociology, anthropology and feminist theory, as an introduction, to inform their practices as midwives and as supports for women and families.

The aim of this module is to introduce the principles of science underpinning the understanding of the human body, and explain the anatomy and physiology of the systems of the body to provide a basis for understanding altered function and healthcare practice.

The aim of this module is to discuss the roles of the nurse/midwife in health promotion and maintaining a safe therapeutic environment and to introduce the nurse/midwife to the core clinical skills required to practice safely in the clinical environment.

Senior Fresh (2nd Year)

Midwifery students only

 The emphasis in this module is placed on integrating the acquired knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology to care offered while practising to protect and promote normality in partnership with the woman.

Midwifery students only

The aims of this module are: To understand the role of the midwife in caring for women with pre-existing pathophysiology(ies) within the multidisciplinary team. The module provides students with the knowledge to identify and understand deviations from normal in order to participate in planning appropriate care and management in clinical practice. To provide a theoretical underpinning to enable students to work in partnership with women and their families and multi-disciplinary colleagues in offering safe and effective support to those experiencing perinatal loss, grief and bereavement.

Midwifery students only

The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to continue to develop their core midwifery practice skills and knowledge. This module builds on the learning in practice that has taken place in year one. In year two students are expected to develop their core midwifery practice skills and knowledge and to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to provide midwifery support and access appropriate help for women with unexpected outcomes and pathophysiologies in pregnancy, labour and childbirth, the  puerperium. Students are expected to rationalise practice, display an understanding of theory underpinning practice as well as begin to appraise their practice in a critical manner.  They are expected to display the ability to access salient research and evidence that support practices, procedures, policies and experiences.

Elective Modules

Introduction to Observational Astronomy

This module aims to introduce students to the science and practice of astronomy.  Allowing students to explore the origins of the solar system and introduce some cosmological concepts pertinent to understanding how the universe came about and what its future holds. It will provide students the opportunity to undertake practical astronomy and to use telescopes and binoculars.

Perspectives on Deafness

This module introduces students to the range of ways in which deafness and Deaf people are categorised – by medical personnel, by hearing people, and by the Deaf community.

Statistics for Healthcare Professionals

The World Health Organisation, the United Nations, the Department of Health and Children and all major international and national organisations have recognised the need for healthcare professions to base treatments, intervention, policy and planning on sound evidence. Part of this evidence is derived from the analysis and compilation of appropriate statistics. In today’s ever changing professional environment it is essential that healthcare professionals are comfortable working with data and deriving and interpreting basic statistics. This module aims to stimulate your interest in, and knowledge and appreciation of healthcare statistics. It will provide you with some key transferable skills that will be useful in all professions. The emphasis in the course will be on applying the techniques to healthcare data and on understanding and interpreting results in real life data sets.

Introduction to Race and Ethnicity

This module introduces participants to the concepts of ‘race’ and ‘ethnicity’ and national identity/citizenship locating ‘race’ within social, economic and political relations and situating ‘race’ and racism in relation to other divisions such as class, religion and gender. Issues specific to Irish society will include the Irish Traveller community and the links between racialization and the asylum/migration processes. Specifically the course addresses issues of race and ethnicity as they relate to nursing practice and the Irish health profession.

Contribution to Society

The overall aim of this module is to provide students with an opportunity to actively contribute to society in a voluntary capacity in an area that is not directly related to nursing practice. Students will plan the type of placement, its location and the key skills and activities they will focus on achieving during their chosen placement. Organising and achieving the aims of this placement is expected to encourage students to develop and control an aspect of their education they feel contributes to their personal and professional development.

Madness in the Movies

This module aims to introduce students to the portrayal of mental illness in contemporary film and to encourage them to develop a critical approach to reading film. Students are also encouraged to review their own personal development and professional practice related to their comprehension of mental illness.

Junior Sophister (3rd Year)

Midwifery students only

The aim of this module is to provide students with opportunity to explore the context of birth and motherhood for women, maternity services and the impact of power structures on women related to childbirth.

Midwifery students only

The aim of this module is to deepen the midwifery students’ knowledge and build on the students’ practice experience of caring for women with complex needs. The approach to this module will be predominantly through enquiry or problem based learning, where students are encouraged to take an active role in their learning by discussing a problem (or scenario) centred on a clinical situation.

Midwifery students only

This module builds on the learning in practice that has taken place in years one and two of the programme. In year three midwifery students are expected to develop their core practice skills and knowledge. They are expected to rationalise practice, display an understanding of theory underpinning practice as well as begin to appraise their practice in a critical manner. Students are expected to display the ability to access salient research and evidence that support practices, procedures, policies and experiences. Exposure to pathophysiological conditions will begin the process of questioning practices and skills as well as reasoning and confirming physiological progression and disease prevention. While under the supervision of a registered midwife, students are encouraged to practice in a more autonomous manner, demonstrating the ability to plan, implement and critically evaluate care. Students will also be expected to care for women who require high dependency care and to base that care on the best available evidence.

The aim of this module is to build on students’ prior knowledge and experience to improve their understanding and awareness of key professional concepts of self-awareness, clinical Judgement, evidence based practice; value based professional practice, decision making, team work and nursing/midwifery management.

Elective Modules

Understanding Drug and Alcohol Addiction

With an increasing public awareness of drug and alcohol use across societies, the debate around emerging and established trends in global drug policies, prevention and treatment how they relate and inform modern public debate. The module will then provide a review of global drug and alcohol prevalence, the basic data monitoring systems and how they can be used for monitoring and evaluation. Finally the module will discuss how to independently evaluate prevention and treatment interventions from varying perspectives from the service user to the wider community.

Digital Healthcare

In line with the Irish Government eHealth Strategy and Strategy for the Design of Integrated Outpatient Services 2016-2020. The aim of this module is to introduce students to best practices in the development and application of digital health to chronic disease management and care. Students will be required to apply learnings from the module to specific disease management cases.

Nutrition and Wellness

This aim of this module is to introduce students to the role that food and nutrition play in health and disease.

Patient Safety and Human Factors in Healthcare

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the concept of human factors and how human factors can impact on healthcare environments.

An Appreciation of Contemporary Poetry in English

This module offers an introduction to four internationally renowned, contemporary poets writing in the English Language. The course introduces a small selection of significant short poems from each: the Nobel Laureate (1995) Seamus Heaney from Ireland, the Irish-American John Montague, the Nobel laureate (1992) Derek Walcott from St Lucia and the Australian Les Murray. This is followed by a descriptive survey of the criticism concerning each of the poems examined.

Measuring and Reporting on Population Health

This module aims to introduce students to basic measurements can be conducted within a community healthcare settings. The focus of the module is on study design, measurement and implementation and on the computation and understanding of statistics and types of measures that arise from these studies and the implication of results for practice. Real life examples will be used to explore these concepts and students will hear case studies from practitioners in public health and community settings.

Senior Sophister (4th Year)

Midwifery students only

This module has two placements.  The first placement allows midwifery students complete their learning at supervised level in preparation for the independent level of practice required during the second placement the Internship.

In Internship, midwifery students engage in supervised practice as employees of the health service. Students begin to engage in independent supervised practice as midwifery and multidisciplinary team members.  The practice exposure and experiences that students receive engenders in them a level of confidence and competence which will serve to consolidate previous learning and facilitate the development of reasoned decision-making skills and practice in a safe supervised environment.

The aim of this module is to help students to apply current research evidence to enhance clinical practice and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to complete a capstone project relevant to their practice.

The aim of this module is to consolidate and further develop nursing and midwifery students’ prior theoretical and clinical learning in preparation for post-registration clinical and professional practice.
