Biography

Laura O'Shea is an Assistant Professor in Midwifery in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin. She has teaching responsibilities across both undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery programmes within the School. She also contributes to teaching on the general nursing programmes and the children's nursing programmes. She is a registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and has experience practicing in various clinical settings. Laura has experience teaching midwifery students in both the academic and clinical settings. Her previous roles include Clinical Tutor in Midwifery, where she worked with students in both clinical practice and academic settings. Laura obtained an MA in Globalisation, Gender and Human Rights from University of Galway. As part of this MA, she conducted qualitative research with young women in the Midwest of Ireland, exploring their experiences of diet culture and representations of the female body on social media. Her professional and research interests include gender-based violence and intimate partner violence in pregnancy, women's health, maternal health, humanisation of birth, gender equality issues and innovative midwifery teaching methodologies and education. Laura is currently undertaking doctoral research exploring the experiences of maternity care professionals who screen for and respond to disclosures of domestic violence in the peripartum period. She is highly interested in gender equality issues and their intersection with maternal and women's health. She is a member of the Athena Swan self-assessment team, who recently obtained the Bronze Award for the School of Nursing and Midwifery in Trinity College Dublin.
