Biography
Susan graduated from TU Dublin (formerly DIT) Conservatoire with a Bachelor of Music degree (first class honours), specialising in pedagogy. Susan obtained a PGDipEd (TCD) and an MA in Musicology with Distinction (Queen’s University Belfast). Susan’s doctoral research (Queen’s University Belfast), which has been described as ‘the philological foundation of German Choralbuch research’ (Remeš, 2021, p. 274), was largely carried out in Germany where she spent some time as DAAD award holder in the Bach-Archiv in Leipzig. Susan worked as a post-primary music teacher for many years and is a regular contributor to press and radio in relation to Leaving Certificate Music. Susan is Assistant Professor of Music Education in Trinity College Dublin, where she leads the bachelor’s in music education and Master in Education (Music) programmes. Susan is also assistant treasurer (former treasurer) of the Society for Music Education in Ireland. Susan’s research combines her interests in musicology and music education, and includes multiple bass chorales, Johann Christian Kittel, the pedagogy of J.S. Bach, instrumental pedagogy and improvisation, initial teacher education, and the accessibility of music education in Ireland.
