Dr Gavin Murphy was recently invited by Professors Becca Lowenhaupt and Andres Castro Samayoa of Boston College's Lynch School of Education to deliver a talk to students as part of the summer programme "Immigration in an Age of Uncertainty: Identity & Education in Dublin" at Boston College Ireland, St. Stephen's Green, Dublin.
Building on ongoing research with Prof. Becca Lowenhaupt, and the partnership between Trinity College Dublin and Boston College, Dr Murphy's presentation "Planting Seeds of Linguistic Social Justice: Migration, Language Policy, and Educational Practice in Ireland" was delivered as part of this Office of Global Education programme.
The talk explored policy, practice, and leadership centered on equity and excellence in relation to plurilingualism in the Irish education system. Dr Murphy provided a systemic analysis of contemporary challenges and opportunities in this space, examining Ireland's unique context and addressing how certain forms of multilingualism are celebrated while others face barriers and injustice.
