The School of Education is currently seeking applications in the ten subject areas listed below, from experienced post-primary teaching professionals who are interested in supporting students on placement. The role will involve placement visits in the school context, as well as a certain amount of work online.
The School of Education’s student teachers complete School Placement in schools up to 85 km from the College. As such, applications are welcomed from applicants within the greater Dublin area and beyond, who are capable of visiting students on placement who may be located anywhere in the country up to a distance of 85km from the Trinity College campus.
The PME is offered in the School of Education with specialisms in ten post primary curriculum subjects i.e.
- Business Studies (including Accounting and Economics)
- Computer Science
- English
- Geography
- History
- An Ghaeilge
- Mathematics (including Applied Mathematics)
- Modern Languages (including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and other Curricular Languages)
- Music
- Science (including Biology, Chemistry and Physics).
Overview of the Role
The School Placement Tutor (SPT) plays an important part in the development of our students teachers. Working individually and as part of a team, the SPT is responsible for supporting, assessing and providing feedback to student teachers whilst they are on School Placement.
Applicants will need to be available to conduct School Placement visits in schools, during school hours.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assessing student teachers' performance on placement, providing feedback to the student teacher, submitting reports in a timely way, participating in student assessment meetings
- Engagement with placement training sessions, including ongoing professional development and learning sessions
- Familiarisation with placement policies and assessment procedures, and reflecting TCD PME's programme values
- Use of university’s IT systems
- Liaising with the PME academic team (Strand Leader, Placement Coordinator, Programme Registrar, Head of School) and placement administration team on routine activities such as placement report submissions and logistical arrangements, expenses claims.
Role Specification
Applicants for role of School Placement Tutor should be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- Fully qualified post-primary teacher, (in one of the ten subject areas outlined above), registered with the Teaching Council
- At least 5 years’ teaching experience and a record of accomplishment in their subject area(s)
- Excellent knowledge and experience of the Irish post-primary curriculum and in-depth knowledge of their chosen subject area(s)
- An understanding of post-primary Initial Teacher Education, particularly the School Placement element, and competency in supporting, mentoring and evaluating student teachers’ practice
- For those interested in supporting and evaluating the work of student teachers in Irish-medium schools (Gaelcholáistí), a high level of competency in Gaeilge is required
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficient IT skills to support reporting, communication, and the programme's use of digital platforms
- It is desirable, but not essential, that applicants will also have a postgraduate qualification or higher in the field of education, other than the PME.
