Erasmus Intensive Programme: Works in Progress

The second Works in Progress Intensive Programme took place in the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal, from the 14th to 25th May 2013. The event brought together taught master students in health and social sciences from five European higher educational institutions: Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), Oslo and Akersus University College (Norway), Jesenice College of Nursing (Slovenia), Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (Portugal) and University of Malta (Malta). The Works in Progress aims to develop master students' knowledge and appreciation of the research process by facilitating the development of their research proposals through discussion, workshops, methodological masterclasses and supervision.
This year's programme included five students from Trinity College, two of whom (Stephanie Emmanuelle Martin and Genevieve Ruiz-O'Sullivan) are students on the M.Sc. in Disability Studies in the School of Social Work and Social Policy. The programme also has a focus on intercultural awareness and this was addressed through a very successful social programme which included visits to Fatima and Nazare. 'The End of Normal: Disability, Diversity and Neoliberalism', a fascinating lecture by Professor Lennard Davis, University of Illinois at Chicago
“Normal” seems to be ending its tyrannical reign over bodies, particularly identities. Instead, it has been replaced by “diversity.” Yet the one area that “normal” reigns supreme is in the realm of disability. These were the issues explored by Prof Davis in his lecture as he tried to account for this discrepancy by considering aspects of life under neoliberalism.
Lennard J. Davis, Professor of English, Disability and Human Development, and Medical Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, delivered his lecture as part of the M.Sc. in Disability Studies Public Lecture Series 2012-13 which was organised in collaboration with the Centre for Deaf Studies and the School of English at TCD. The Director of the Trinity Long Room Hub was delighted to chair the lecture given the relevance of this topic to Trinity's new research theme on identities in transformation recently launched by the President of Ireland.

M.Sc. in Disability Studies presents a Seminar and a Workshop, Thursday 16th May 2013
Seminar:
“So you want to get published!!!: A dozen guaranteed ways to irritate your editor” by Professor Seamus Hegarty at 2.30pm in the Mháirtín Uí Chadhain Theatre, Arts Building, TCD
Academic publishing in peer-reviewed journals may look dated in these days of electronic communication but it is still an important backdrop to the lives of academics and researchers the world over. Seamus Hegarty has been involved with journal publishing as author, reviewer and editor for more than 30 years. In this seminar he will draw on this experience to describe some of the ways in which academic writers make the passage into print more difficult for themselves. Avoiding these pitfalls will not guarantee that acceptance letter - there is no substitute for good research, clearly reported - but ignoring them increases the likelihood that you will be told to try elsewhere.
Audience: All welcome

M.Sc. in Disability Studies students, TCD, at the Reframing Disability Exhibition, Dublin City Library and Archive

“The M.Sc. in Disability Studies, Trinity College Dublin, opened the 2012-2013 academic year with a visit to the exhibition Re-framing disability: portraits from the Royal College of Physicians in the Dublin City Library and Archives. A diverse group of students from five different countries (Canada, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, and Nigeria) looked at a collection of portraits of disabled individuals from the 17th to the 19th centuries many of whom exhibited themselves to earn a living. The exhibition is accompanied by the commentary of 27 disabled individuals who have looked at the portraits and reflected on the public display of disability and its impact on the lives of disabled people nowadays. This exhibition on a snapshot of the history of disability and contemporary debates served as an excellent opportunity for M.Sc. in Disability Studies students to explore core themes addressed through the different modules in the programme such as historical perspectives on disability, disability experience and identity, normalcy, and disability models and classifications in a global framework.”
