Joe's main area of research interest focuses on exploring the nexus of work and welfare. He is particularly interested in exploring and understanding lived experiences in the context of welfare recipiency, focusing on the processes and effects of welfare conditionality.
Areas of particular research and scholarly interest include: ideology and welfare; stigma and social welfare; welfare states; welfare conditionalities; work and unemployment; income maintenance; sustainability and capability in the context of social policy; universal basic income; universal basic services; participation income; poverty, social class and social exclusion; social research, theory and practice; professional values and ethics; social work within welfare states;
