The School of Computer Science and Statistics is delighted to congratulate Formula Trinity on its outstanding performance at the IMechE Formula Student UK 2026 competition, where the autonomous team achieved its strongest results to date.
Made up largely of students from the School of Computer Science and Statistics, the autonomous team delivered a historic performance at Silverstone. After successfully passing every stage of static and dynamic testing, the team completed both the Sprint and Trackdrive events for the first time in Formula Trinity’s history.
A standout achievement came during Trackdrive, where the autonomous vehicle completed 10 consecutive laps without knocking over a single cone, demonstrating exceptional reliability and precision. The team finished 4th in Trackdrive, 5th in Sprint and secured an impressive 5th place overall, Formula Trinity Autonomous’ best-ever competition result.
The team also won 1st place in the Real World AI competition. The presentation explored the current state of autonomous vehicles and the social, ethical and technical challenges surrounding their deployment. The award recognised the team’s ability to combine cutting-edge engineering with thoughtful consideration of AI’s broader impact.
These achievements reflect years of work in computer vision, robotics and software engineering, as well as close collaboration between computing and engineering students across Trinity. The School is especially proud that many of the students leading the autonomous programme are applying the knowledge and skills developed through their studies to solve real-world engineering challenges.
The School of Computer Science and Statistics congratulates the entire team on this remarkable achievement. The team also extends its sincere thanks to SCSS for its continued support, which has played an important role in this success. We look forward to seeing them continue to push the boundaries of autonomous racing as they develop an Autonomous Driverless System (ADS) race car for the 2027 competition.
Sponsorship will play a vital role in helping our students build Western Europe’s first IC autonomous race car. To discuss sponsorship opportunities or learn more about partnering with the team, please contact the team directly at business@formulatrinity.ie.
