The School of Computer Science and Statistics recently hosted its annual 'Speed Connect' event, a cornerstone of the MCS Internships Programme and one of the most anticipated dates in the School’s calendar. Each year, Speed Connect proves its value by bringing together our students and leading technology companies in a format designed to maximise opportunity and impact for everyone involved.

The event is structured around a “speed interviewing” model, allowing students to meet with up to eight different companies in a single afternoon. This unique approach provides unparalleled exposure for students, who can test their skills, build confidence, and showcase their abilities across multiple interactions. For employers, Speed Connect offers a direct window into the next generation of computer science talent, students who are consistently among the highest achievers in their cohort.

The atmosphere this year was nothing short of electric. The room was filled with conversation and enthusiasm as students took on the challenge of representing themselves, and the School. Many of our industry partners commented on the professionalism and energy of the students they met.

Eimear Morhan, Internships Co-ordinator said: "Our students really appreciated the opportunity to speak directly with recruiters, learning more about the companies through conversations that felt more authentic than the typical recruitment process. The event works well for recruiters too and many call back students directly from meeting them at the event for interview or to fast track their offers."

Students who take part in the internships programme are undertaking the integrated 5 year BA(mod) & Masters in Computer Science programme. As part of this pathway, companies have the opportunity to host a computer science student for a five-to-eight month paid internship.

Internships remain one of the most effective bridges between higher education and the workplace. They give companies the chance to identify and invest in emerging talent early, while students benefit from hands-on experience that often leads directly to job offers upon graduation. In an increasingly competitive market, Speed Connect continues to stand out as a model of how industry and academia can collaborate effectively.

The School extends its sincere thanks to all the partners who joined us this year for their ongoing support and engagement.

Congratulations to all of our students who took part in this year’s Speed Connect, your preparation, professionalism and energy continue to make this event a success and reflect the very best of the School.
