The Discipline of Statistics and Information Systems at the School of Computer Science and Statistics hosted its inaugural Postgraduate Workshop on Monday, 8 December, marking the launch of a new annual platform to highlight emerging research across the discipline.

The event brought together around 40 faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students for a full day of presentations and discussion. Designed to strengthen collaboration and foster a vibrant research culture, the workshop featured twelve talks spanning model‑based clustering, kernel density estimation, functional data analysis, sequential Bayesian estimation, and diversity–interaction modelling.

Speakers demonstrated the real‑world impact of their work through applications in paediatric sleep health, agri‑tech, epidemiology, earthquake location modelling, climate and crop‑yield forecasting, and health‑data reporting. Attendees described the sessions as lively, engaging, and reflective of the growing breadth of research within the discipline.

Three presenters received awards for best talks:

  • Daniel Suessler BecerraAdministrative Health Data in Madagascar: Statistical Methods for Reporting Bias and Missing Data
  • Dhorasso TemfackAccelerated Bayesian Inference for State‑Space Epidemiological Models with Ensemble SMC2
  • James O’MalleyModelling Multispecies Grassland Mixture Yields Across a Climatic Gradient

The workshop is expected to become a regular fixture in the School’s calendar, supporting early‑career researchers and strengthening the discipline’s collective expertise.
