Evening Courses

Whether for personal reasons or professional purposes, an evening language course can offer a manageable and achievable means of improving your language fluency or adding a new language to your repertoire. We offer enjoyable and accessible public evening courses in the following languages:

  • Irish Sign Language
  • Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Turkish
  • Korean

Our extramural classes commence in September each year, and run over a period of twenty-four weeks divided into two terms (twelve + twelve), except the ISL Introduction course which runs for 10 weeks from January. Most classes are held in CLCS (follow signs for the Language Centre), Level 4, Arts Building, Trinity College, Dublin 2. Irish Sign Language (ISL) classes are held in the Centre for Deaf Studies on Level 1, 7 – 9 South Leinster Street, Dublin 2.

Reduced fee for those in receipt of social welfare payments. Important: please contact the office at clcsinfo@tcd.ie in advance of selecting this option.

Fees are payable in advance. There is a reduced fee for unemployed persons and those in receipt of social welfare pension. Fees are strictly non-refundable once the course has commenced.

Pay the course fee. There is no need to have a PayPal account to use this payment method, you can use your own card to transfer the course fee.

IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE
Introduction to Irish Sign Language

This course introduces learners to ISL and delivers a curriculum that is aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The aim is to bring students to level A2 receptive skills and A1 productive skills which allows for engagement in basic conservation with Deaf people. This course also introduces students to Deaf culture.

MANDARIN CHINESE
Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture Post Beginners Chinese

This course teaches a basic survival repertoire of spoken Chinese and introduces some central aspects of Chinese culture, including the writing system. As much use as possible is made of authentic materials.

Mondays, 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm starting on 11th September 2023

This course is designed to extend learners’ ‘survival’ repertoire of spoken Chinese and their knowledge of the Chinese writing system (there is regular practice in character composition and recognition). Aspects of the cultural background are also dealt with. This course will take place only if there are sufficient enrolments to make it viable.

JAPANESE
Introduction to Japanese Language and Culture Post-Beginners Japanese

This course teaches a basic 'survival' repertoire of spoken Japanese and introduces some central aspects of Japanese culture, including the writing system. As much use as possible is made of authentic materials.

This course is offered to learners who have successfully completed post-beginners Japanese. It will take place only if there are sufficient enrolments to make it viable.

Introduction to Turkish Language and Culture Post-Beginners Turkish

This course teaches basic spoken Turkish for everyday communication and introduces some central aspects of Turkish culture. As much use as possible is made of authentic materials.

Introduction to Korean Language and Culture Post-Beginners Korean

Learn a basic survival repertoire of spoken Korean and some central aspects of Korean culture, including the unique and easy to learn writing system (Hangul). As much use as possible is made of authentic Korean materials.

Continuing from the introduction to Korean language and culture, this course is designed to extend learners' basic repertoire of spoken Korean and their familiarity with the Korean writing system. Aspects of Korean culture are also explored.

Please note:

  • Application acceptance will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Classes have a minimum enrolment and may not proceed in the case of insufficient enrolments. Full reimbursements will be provided in this case.
  • You must be 18 years of age or older to enrol in the CLCS Extramural Evening Language Courses.
  • Please note that these do not lead to a professional qualification and do not attract any certification mapped to the National Framework of Qualifications.
