Trinity College Dublin marked Trinity Monday 2022 with the announcement of a new cohort of Fellows and Scholars, with the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy celebrating four recipients of this prestigious honour. Professor Thomas Chadefaux of the Department of Political Science was named a Fellow in recognition of his research using computational and quantitative methods to study the origins and dynamics of armed conflict. Professor John Divers, who holds the Chair of Moral Philosophy (1837), was awarded a Professorial Fellowship — the highest category of the honour — in recognition of his internationally acclaimed work in modal logic, metaphysics, and the theory of possibility and necessity. Dr Gizem Arikan, also of Political Science, was elected a Fellow in recognition of her research into the political and social consequences of religious belief, including work on how religion shapes attitudes toward immigration and outgroup members. Dr Jan Skopek of the Department of Sociology was likewise elected a Fellow for his contributions to research on social stratification, educational inequality, and life course sociology.
Fellowships at Trinity are awarded to recognise excellence in research and scholarship, and to acknowledge a professor's contribution to academic life and teaching within the College. The ceremony, held in Front Square on Trinity Monday, was the first time in three years that the honour had been conferred in person, with Provost Dr Linda Doyle reading out the names of Fellows and Scholars from the steps of the Public Theatre.
