Key Equality Areas

Equality, diversity and inclusion at the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy encompasses all of the protected grounds recognised in Irish law. Below is an overview of our commitment across each area, alongside links to the relevant supports and resources available through Trinity College Dublin.

Age

Staff and students of all ages are equally valued at the School. We are committed to promoting positive ageing and intergenerational learning, and to ensuring that age is never a barrier to participation, progression or belonging.

Disability

We are committed to making the School as accessible as possible, in its physical spaces, its information, and its activities, so that all staff and students can reach their full potential. Natasha Halpin, our EDI Manager, also serves as Disability Liaison Officer for the School and is available to provide guidance and support.

Ethnicity and nationality

The School welcomes the cultural diversity of our community and is committed to the equal treatment of all staff and students regardless of race, ethnicity or nationality. We are actively working to ensure that our environment is one where every background is respected and represented.

Family and relationships

We recognise and celebrate the diversity of family and relationship structures in our community. The School is committed to non-discrimination on the basis of family or civil status, and to ensuring that all staff and students feel supported in balancing their personal and professional lives.

Gender

Gender equality is a central strand of our EDI work. Through our Athena Swan Action Plan, we are taking structured, evidenced action to advance equitable treatment across all genders, including between women and men, and in supporting all members of our community across the spectrum of gender identity and gender expression.

Our Athena Swan Commitment

Religion

The School welcomes diversity of religious belief and non-belief, and is committed to non-discrimination on the basis of religion. We aim to create an environment where all traditions and perspectives are respected.

Sexual orientation

The School is proud of Trinity's LGBTQIA+ inclusive culture and its long history connected with the Irish civil movement for sexual and gender minorities. Staff and students can expect a safe, welcoming environment and the support they need to thrive.

Socio-economic background

We are committed to widening access and participation at the School, and to ensuring that socio-economic background is never a barrier to academic achievement. We welcome students from all backgrounds and actively support those who have not yet had the opportunity to realise their full potential.

Traveller community

The School is committed to increasing the participation of members of the Traveller community in our programmes, and to ensuring that all Travellers in our community are treated with equal respect and dignity.
