BESS is a four-year programme built around a common first year followed by a process of gradual specialisation. Students study all four disciplines in first year before selecting a pathway from second year onwards, with a final pathway confirmed at the start of third year. For a full explanation of the course architecture and degree combinations available, visit the Course Structure page.

Course Structure

BESS offers a mix of large lectures and smaller tutorial groups. Some first year modules, particularly the more popular ones, can have up to 300 students in the lecture theatre, but tutorials typically have between 15 and 25 students. As the years progress and students specialise, class sizes become smaller. Many Senior Sophister modules have between 30 and 50 students.

Current students find the maths module challenging but manageable. There is a weekly online review assessment which supports continuous learning and helps identify any difficulties early, so students can get support where they need it. Students who engage consistently with the work tend to do well.

CAO entry points vary each year. For the most up-to-date entry points information visit the Trinity Courses website.
