Athena Swan
The School of Social Sciences and Philosophy holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award, in recognition of our commitment to advancing gender equality across academic and professional life. Our Action Plan for 2025 to 2030 sets out the concrete steps we are taking to make that commitment real, for students, for staff, and for the School as a whole.
What is Athena Swan?
Athena Swan is a framework used by universities and research institutions to advance gender equality in higher education. Institutions apply for awards at Bronze, Silver, and Gold level, demonstrating through evidence and action that they are working meaningfully to address inequality. Holding an award is not an endpoint, it is a commitment to continuous improvement, accountability, and change.
Our commitment
Athena Swan is a School-wide endeavour. It involves our academic and professional staff, our students, and our leadership. We welcome engagement, challenge, and ideas from everyone who is part of the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
Our Athena Swan Action Plan sets out our commitment to gender equality across the School for the period 2025 to 2030. Built around five priorities, and identified through data, consultation, and honest reflection, it maps the actions we are taking to make the School a more equal place to study and work.
