CLU33126 Alexandria and Beyond: Imaging and Re-Imaging the Ancient City

This module examines the ancient city of Alexandria from an archaeological point of view but also takes into consideration ancient and later textual evidence. The focus will be on the city as a centre of the Hellenistic world, but earlier (pre-Hellenistic) and later (Roman and Late Antique) periods will be included in order to complete the picture of the city in classical Antiquity. Other territories under Alexandrian possession (mainly Cyrene and Cyprus) or influence will also be considered. The module will also discuss the effect this iconic city had on modern scholarship and popular imagination.
