The Athena Swan Charter is an internationally recognised framework that supports higher education and research institutions in advancing gender equality and creating more inclusive working and learning environments.

Institutions and departments that participate in the Charter undertake a rigorous process of

  • collecting and analysing data on gender equality
  • identifying barriers to equality and inclusion
  • developing a multi-year action plan to address those barriers
  • monitoring progress and demonstrating evidence of change

Awards are granted at three levels:

  • Bronze – recognises a thorough self-assessment and a credible action plan for improvement
  • Silver – recognises evidence that actions have led to measurable progress
  • Gold – recognises sustained achievement and sector-leading practice
