The team studies how willow can serve as a nature‑based solution for wastewater treatment in rural communities. Their work explores how this fast‑growing crop can help reduce pollution and support more sustainable treatment systems.
Around 30 participants attended the workshop, which combined craft techniques with insights into the group’s environmental research.
Dr Owen Humphreys, Senior Technical Officer in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, said:
“We use a type of basket willow in our wastewater treatment research which has been used in traditional crafts in Ireland for centuries. To celebrate St Brigid’s Day we had a great opportunity to introduce people to willow weaving and explain how willow is also used in environmental engineering to reduce river pollution.”
The workshop brought together heritage, science and community, offering a practical look at how engineering research links with long‑standing Irish traditions.
