The process, known as Metal Additive using Polymer Sheets (MAPS), encloses metal powders in thin flexible sheets that can be handled safely and cleanly. Researchers at Trinity College Dublin, led by Dr Rocco Lupoi and Dr Ramesh Babu, demonstrated that these sheets allow easier material handling, simpler switching between metals and more controlled manufacturing conditions.
Addicoat is now advancing this work towards commercial use, with potential applications ranging from coatings to full metal parts produced on roll-to-roll systems. The company has patented the technology and is seeking partners interested in bringing this new feedstock approach into industrial environments.
The full feature from Additive Manufacturing Media provides a detailed look at the technology, its origins and its possible impact.
