Professor Ciaran Simms of Trinity College Dublin’s School of Engineering has been awarded the 2025 Bertil Aldman Award by the International Research Council on Biomechanics of Injury (IRCOBI).

The award, presented at the IRCOBI Europe Conference 2025 in Vilnius, Lithuania (10 - 12 September), recognises Professor Simms’ outstanding contributions to transportation safety and injury biomechanics.

Professor Simms, who is also co-founder of KineMo, has dedicated his career to advancing knowledge and technologies that reduce injury risk and improve safety in transport systems worldwide.

The award is named after Professor Bertil Aldman (1925 - 1998), a Swedish physician and pioneer in traffic safety research. His work led to the development of life-saving innovations such as seat belts, rear-facing child seats and airbags.

Speaking about the recognition, Professor Simms said:

“It is an honour to receive this award in Professor Aldman’s name. His work transformed transport safety, and I am proud to contribute to this field alongside many talented colleagues.”

The School of Engineering extends its warmest congratulations to Professor Simms on this achievement and thanks IRCOBI for recognising his life-long contributions to safety and biomechanics research.
