Pre-Sessional Pathway Programme

This course is suitable for students with a conditional offer to study a postgraduate course at Trinity College, subject to reaching the minimum English language requirement. To be accepted into the pre-sessional course, you must submit an IELTS certificate (issued in the last two years) showing that you have achieved a minimum 6.0 overall score, with no band area below 5.5.

Passing the Pre-Masters pathway programme is one way of fulfilling Trinity’s English Language requirement. This intensive course aims at supporting your academic literacy through discipline-specific assessments and materials that simulate the academic practices of a postgraduate program. The programme also aims at orientating students to Trinity’s academic culture, through immersive, on-campus teaching and activities.

 

Assessment

The assessment is a combination of coursework and a standardized examination

Summative Coursework 

  1. A 3,000 word academic essay (20%) 
  2. A presentation and questions (20%) 

Standardized Examination  
The end-of-course examination follows an integrated approach to the four key skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking. 

  1. Academic Reading: three academic texts with annotations and questions (15%) 
  2. Academic Listening: an academic lecture with a note-taking exercise and questions (15%) 
  3. Academic Writing: an academic essay integrating information from the reading and listening (15%) 
  4. Academic Speaking: a viva and discussion based on the reading, listening and essay (15%)

Discipline Specific Teaching Approach

This is a bespoke programme that aims at maximizing authentic opportunities to use and practice the English language. Classes are limited to 12 students and aim at cultivating the academic literacy and practices indigenous to students’ future field of study. Classes are taught by EAP experts from Trinity’s Centre for English Language Learning and Teaching

Topics

Topics covered during the 8 week course include:

  • Efficient and critical reading
  • Describing theory and previous literature
  • Distinguishing between fact and opinion in reading and lectures
  • Evaluating the nature and relevance of sources and evidence in reading and lectures
  • Application of ideas contained within texts to the dissertation
  • Analyzing how texts support and challenge one another
  • Academic referencing
  • Coherence and cohesion in academic writing
  • Linking ideas
  • Synthesizing information from several sources into writing
  • Developing strong argumentation and criticality
  • Describing experiments and methodological approach
  • Paper to presentation
  • Incorporating supervisor feedback into the revised thesis
  • Oral presentation skills and the use of visual aids
  • Formulating and expressing responses to oral and written texts 
  • Synthesizing and defending research design and findings without the use of visual aids
  • Presenting evidence and information without bias
  • Identifying and using technical and semi-technical vocabulary
  • Developing oral as well as written academic discussion
