Applications now open!
The Pre-Master’s Pathway Programme is suitable for students with a conditional offer for postgraduate study at Trinity College Dublin, subject to fulfilling the minimum English language requirement. To be accepted on the PMPP, you must submit an IELTS certificate (issued within the last two years) showing that you have achieved a minimum 6.0 overall score, with no band area below 5.5.
Learning and Teaching
The PMPP supports students’ development of academic literacy and oral communication skills in English through learning and assessment activities associated with their field of postgraduate study. It maximises authentic opportunities to use English in an academic context and immerses students in Trinity’s academic culture.
Classes take place for four hours daily, 20 hours per week, over 10 weeks. They are taught by EAP experts from Trinity’s Centre for English Language Learning and Teaching.
Topics covered during PMPP include:
- Reading and evaluating academic texts
- Writing in academic genres
- Active listening to academic content
- Oral communication in the academic context
- Critical thinking and argumentation
- Note-taking, paraphrasing, and academic referencing
- Using academic and technical vocabulary
- Group-work and discussion on academic issues
- Giving fluent and accurate academic presentations
- Cross-cultural communication
The PMPP is assessed through a combination of coursework and skills-based tests focusing on the use of English in an academic context. Coursework assignments involve writing an academic essay and giving an oral presentation on an academic topic. Passing the PMPP enables students to fulfil Trinity’s English Language requirement.
